EFCC Reacts To Acquittal Of Former President Jonathan’s Cousins Azibaola In $40m Fraud Case

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has reacted to the acquittal of Robert Azibaola, a cousin to former president, Goodluck Jonathan, who was charged for $40 million fraud before Justice Nnamdi Dimgba. Tony Orilade, EFCC Head of Media, described the judgement as unfortunate. The EFCC expressed concern that despite the weight of evidence brought before the court and witnesses presented, Justice Dimgba held that, “the prosecution must show directly how the defendant took possession of funds and knew that it forms part of proceeds of corruption.” It disclosed that the commission’s legal team “will be studying the judgement thoroughly and will be taking necessary actions to appeal it as we hope that the appellate court shall view the merit of the prosecution and do justice to the case

INEC withdraws 25 certificates-of-return In accordance with court orders, the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, said it has withdrawn 25 certificates-of-return issued some candidates that won during the 2019 elections. Chairman of Information and Voter Education Committee, IVEC, Mr Festus Okoye, stated this at a forum on media coverage of the polls in Enugu, yesterday. Okoye noted that 20 of the 25 certificates-of-return were withdrawn from All Progressive Congress, APC, members and given to other APC members; while two from People Democratic Party, PDP, members were withdrawn and given to other PDP members.

Teachers commence indefinite strike in Oyo Primary school teachers in Oyo State commenced an indefinite strike on Monday due to delay in payment of salaries and other requests. The chairman, Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Oyo State wing, Samson Adedoyin, told Premium Times that the strike became necessary due to the inability of the state government to meet demands of the union. The NUT had last week issued a 72-hour ultimatum to the Oyo State government to clear and settle the backlogs of salaries owed its members. The union, while lamenting over unpaid salaries of primary school teachers, gave the state government 72 hours’ notice to address their challenges or face an indefinite strike action.

US former president, Jimmy Carter falls, breaks hips Former President of US, Jimmy Carter is recovering from surgery after a fall on Monday, the Carter Center said. A statement said the 94-year-old Democrat fell at his home in Plains, Georgia, on his way to go turkey hunting, and later underwent a successful surgery. "He is recovering comfortably from surgery to repair a broken hip at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia," the Carter Center said. "His surgeon stated that the surgery was successful. His wife, Rosalynn, is with him." In March, Carter became the oldest-living former president in US history, having survived a bout with cancer in recent years. The Monday statement following the surgery said Carter was still set on hunting next season despite his fall.

Sanusi resigns over installation of new emirs in Kano A District Head of Bebeji Local Government Area of Kano, Haruna Sanusi, has resigned his appointment less than 48 hours after the installation of four new emirs in the state. Sanusi’s resignation on Monday was in reaction to the installation of heads of new emirates by Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and his loyalty to the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi. According to Daily Nigerian, the traditional leader cited “health ground and recent changes in the emirate system” as reason for his resignation. The state now has five emirates: Kano, Rano, Gaya, Karaye and Bichi. All Emirs would have equal powers and are to be on same first class status as Sanusi.

524,315 applicants jostle for 3,200 vacancies in customs The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) said 524,315 applicants had successfully completed their application process in the ongoing recruitment exercise of 3,200 personnel by the service. The Public Relations Officer of the service, Mr Joseph Attah disclosed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday. NAN reports that NCS on April 17, opened a recruitment portal to fill vacancies of 3,200. No fewer than 800 officers are to be recruited to fill vacancies for Superintendent cadre, while 2,400 are to fill that of Customs Inspector and Customs Assistant cadre. Attah told NAN that a total of 278, 582 applicants applied for the Superintendent cadre while the remaining applicants completed the process for Inspectorate and Customs Assistant cadres. “A total number of people that registered is 828,333, but not all of them accomplished the process,” he said. Haram terrorists in Borno The Nigerian Army has said its troops of 22 Brigade,engaged in Operative Lafiya Dole, in collaboration with local vigilantes, have rescued 54 persons abducted by Boko Haram terrorists in Borno State. The army, in a statement by its acting spokesman, Col. Sagir Musa, said out of the number, 29 were women while 25 others were children of various ages and sex. The statement which said the troops’ success was during a clearance operation carried out into the hinterland of the state last Saturday, also said its troops of 145 Battalion, operating at Zari – Kasake and Jumachere villages in Damasak general area of Mobbar Local Government Area of the state, discovered and destroyed two Boko Haram terrorists’ logistics vehicles.

Nigerian woman arrested for alleged drug trafficking and later released has arrived Nigeria.  Zainab Aliyu    Zainab Aliyu, a Nigerian previously detained in Saudi Arabia for alleged drug trafficking, has returned to the country after spending four months in detention.   Aliyu had been detained in the Arab country since December when she was arrested at the Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz International Airport in Medina because tramadol, a banned drug was found in her bag.   She arrived in Nigeria through the Malam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano on Monday in the company of Ibrahim Abubakar, another Nigerian accused of the same crime.   Aliyu, a 22-year-old student of the Maitama Sule University in Kano, had travelled to Saudi Arabia for lesser hajj alongside her mother and sister.   She was arrested by Saudi police authorities over allegations that the bag bearing her name tag contained tramadol.   Zainab Aliyu in...

Sri Lankan police fired tear gas at mobs attacking mosques and shops owned by Muslims on Monday and imposed a nationwide curfew after the worst outbreak of sectarian violence since the Easter bombings by Islamist militants. The militants targeted churches and hotels, most of them in Colombo, killing more than 250 people in an attack claimed by Islamic State and fuelling fears of a backlash against the island nation’s minority Muslims.  Residents in Muslim parts of North Western Province said mobs had attacked mosques and damaged shops and businesses owned by Muslims for a second day. “There are hundreds of rioters, police and army are just watching.
